Wolford's Velvet 66 is the brand's plush, semi-opaque option: a 66-denier knit with a soft, velvety surface and the polish Wolford is known for. At about $45 it is a luxury cold-weather tight. We wore them through cold days to judge the comfort against the cost.
We tested the black pair in size M. The Velvet 66 is a 66-denier semi-opaque tight with a brushed, velvety finish, a cotton gusset, and Wolford's flat sewn waistband. Wolford positions it for cooler weather and smarter dressing, so we wore it to the office and an evening out.
The velvet finish is the signature: a soft, slightly raised surface that catches light differently from a standard opaque, giving a quiet luxury feel. The 66-denier knit is warm without heavy bulk. The waistband lies flat and the toe seam is comfortable for long wear.
Wolford sizing runs true to height and hip; the M fit our 5'6" tester cleanly with no ankle excess. Between sizes, size up — the waistband gives less than the leg. The 66-denier coverage is even and opaque enough for winter while staying lighter than a true opaque.
For cool-to-cold days the Velvet 66 was genuinely warm and comfortable through long sits and walks. After two washes in a delicates bag the velvet surface and shape held. Like all Wolford, it rewards careful handling.
At $45 you pay for the finish and the brand, but the comfort and look justify it for a few key pairs. Buy one in black and one in a color and you have winter covered with polish.
Best for those wanting a premium, warm semi-opaque with a distinctive finish. A cold-weather upgrade from basic opaques.
